About Me
Working to make a difference
My name is Vera Armer. I commenced my therapeutic career after obtaining my Psychology degree, working in the third sector. After studying counselling I volunteered as a telephone helpline worker for a family charity, and also worked for Homestart working one to one with a family in need. I then worked in public health as a health trainer helping people to improve their lifestyles in the areas of managing alcohol, stopping smoking, healthy eating and improving exercise. I then moved into primary care mental health work training to be a psychological wellbeing practitioner, and finally to qualifying as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist.

About Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
According to empirical evidence CBT is the treatment of choice for depression and all of the anxiety disorders, OCD and PTSD (NICE guidance).
Through the use of various psychotherapy methods and collaborative treatment measures, my clients develop life-changing habits to help them cope with any of life’s various obstacles. My therapy sessions are designed to dissect personal issues and provide clients with effective tools to help them see the glass half full instead of half empty and to reclaim their lives.
More about CBT
The basic tenets of CBT are that when we are feeling low or anxious, our Cognitions (thoughts, beliefs, assumptions) impact on our Behaviours (what we do, or indeed avoid doing) and serve to maintain an unwanted mood state (for example depression or one of the anxiety disorders). In order to improve the mood state, the unhelpful cognitions and behaviours are identified and the therapy focuses on challenging and changing them, to bring about an improvement to mood. Whilst CBT does not work in the past, at the early stages of therapy during assessment, the past is explored to identify earlier experiences that may have predisposed the client to be or become depressed or anxious.

A Bit More About CBT
We can't change the cause of your problem - but we can change the reactions which maintain it
I implement effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding among patients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix. CBT however is a short term therapy that necessitates participation and investment from the client and therapist alike, including between session "homework" tasks. The reward for making small changes to self-defeating behaviour and coping with feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and pain can bring life-altering results.

What To Expect At Your Visit
The first visit will begin the assessment process and help us both to start to get to know each other and understand your therapy needs. With CBT we target specific disorders and only employ the most appropriate treatment plans. Subsequent sessions will be targetting your own goals of therapy. Whatever your needs may be, I am here to offer support. Therapy is a process of growth and self-discovery, and in my sessions I promote behavioral transformation by encouraging a positive outlook and the adoption of new attitudes and reactions. I have the tools and professional experience to help you get back on track.

Individual Therapy
I work with people aged 17 and over with no upper age limit.
